It was Bill Blass who famously said, “When in doubt, wear red,” and many in the industry continue to rely on these words of wisdom.
There is probably no color as closely associated with Christmas as red: the cheery hue is on Santa’s coat, on Rudolph’s nose, and on the bows wrapped tightly around our boxes. For the fashionistas, red is a blessing as well, adding a pop of color that can make any drab outfit appear festive. Of course, not everyone would be comfortable with wearing a color as bold as red, and some may choose to limit this to their accessories. If you’re one of those people, then a bright red shoe may be just what you need.
Of course, just as Lyst explains in one of their latest fashion editorials, “First seen on the runways of Miu Miu, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, and then on the streets,” the perfect red shoe can be used “not just for the holiday parties already on our calendar, but for days in the office, date nights and everything in-between.” You might even be able to use the bright red shoe on Halloween next year as you dress up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
More than a fashion icon, the bright red shoe has also been used in charity work, with the annual Red Shoe Day in San Diego immediately coming to mind. Every year, over a thousand volunteers march across the streets of San Diego holding red shoes to collect donations for San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. “Every dollar we raise on Red Shoe Day comes right here to San Diego Ronald McDonald House. Forty seven rooms provide a home away from home for a family with a child in medical crisis,” said Chuck Day, CEO of the Ronald McDonald House.
While the original Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz have reportedly gone for as much as $612,000 in an auction, there are many cheaper finds that are just as fashionable. If you’re unsure with how to pull of the red shoe, however, Oprah has a few tips:
“A crisp, white long-sleeved women’s shirt paired with tailored black pants or a pencil skirt is the perfect canvas for your red flats to shine.”
”The trick to wearing red shoes is to make them the focal point of the outfit by eliminating other red accessories. Never feel as that you need to match your outfit with your red shoes.” And,
“For a night-time look, team your heels with a pair of dark denim, black or grey coloured skinny’s or fitted pants with a chic and sophisticated tailored top.”
